A former president is getting some face time with the nation’s money. On November 18, the United States Mint will introduce the new Presidential $1 Coin bearing Abraham Lincoln’s visage.
In honor of the release of the new coin, the public is invited to a launch ceremony on November 19. The event will be held at President Lincoln’s Cottage on the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C.
Though many people have probably had limited contact with $1 coins—save an inconvenient incident with a Metro farecard machine and a $20 bill—this is actually the 16th edition of the coin.
The coin’s obverse (heads side) design, created by Mint sculptor-engraver Don Everhart, has an image of Lincoln as well as the inscriptions “Abraham Lincoln,” “In God We Trust,” “16th President” and “1861-1865.”
The U.S. Mint is providing banks with the coins. The new legal tender is also good for collecting, the Mint notes.
The new $1 coin may not necessarily excite consumers with pockets, or small wallets, congratulations are in order for Mr. Lincoln. It seems he has upgraded a hundred fold—from being the face of the penny to the face of the dollar.
