The Fourth of July is a day all Americans can celebrate their independence. But maybe it's time you relinquished a little of that independence by committing the next 10 to 20 years to another living thing, which you'll have to feed, pay vet bills for and clean a box of pee once a day (or once a week, whatever).

OK, so maybe Independence Day and getting a cat don’t necessarily connect. But in celebration of the Fourth of July, the Washington Humane Society (1201 New York Ave. N.E.) is hosting a cat and kitten adoption event.

Adoption fees for felines will be just one-fourth of the usual cost. Plus, the Humane Society is offering same-day adoptions so you can bring your new kitty home just in time for it to hide under the bed during all those noisy fireworks.

The reduced adoption fees also cover the cost of spaying or neutering, deworming, flea and tick treatments and vaccinations. So you can be sure that when you let that kitty up onto your couch, all you'll be getting is cuddles. Aww!

The adoption event starts at noon and ends at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1.
