End of Capitol Reflecting Pool Near?

Public meetings planned to discuss plan

WASHINGTON -- A new vision for the National Mall and its surroundings may not include the Capitol Reflecting Pool.

The National Park Service has unveiled its new "preliminary preferred alternative" plan for the Mall. Public meetings and a commenting period are now under way.

The Capitol Reflecting Pool and the Sylvan Theater would be removed, according to the new plan, but the D.C. War Memorial would be restored along with the Grant Memorial, according to the Washington Post.

The Capitol Reflecting Pool, not to be confused with the larger Reflecting Pool at the other end of the Mall between the Lincoln and World War II memorials, could be replaced with another water feature. The Sylvan Theater could be replaced with a multipurpose entertainment facility, according to the Post.

To view the new plan released this week, visit the National Park Service Web site. Comments can be made on the site. There will also be two public meetings -- from 5 to 7 p.m. on March 11 and from noon to 2 p.m. on March 14 at the Old Post Office (12th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Room 107).

Public comments will be taken into consideration, so the final version of the new vision of the Mall won't take shape until next year at the earliest.
